Research Studies

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS AND IMPORTANT INFORMATION.

 ·   Candidates applying to more than one research programme must submit separate applications to each.  Applications must be signed and dated.  Incomplete applications may be refused.  Self-attested photocopies or digital scans of educational/degree certificates are sufficient for purpose of the initial application.

·  Applicants must identify, in Item 16 of the official application form and in the box at the top of application Page 1, the research area(s) in which they intend to pursue research and the School to which their applications are directed.  This will ensure that the application is reviewed by the appropriate committee.  An applicant may indicate two such areas, if her/his work is of a fundamentally interdisciplinary nature, without having to file separate applications.  However, there must be separate applications to different degree programmes.

Schools in which M.Phil./Ph.D. scholars shall be enrolled:

SLS: School of Liberal Studies

SDS: School of Development Studies

SHS: School of Human Studies

SHE: School of Human Ecology

SES: School of Educational Studies [applications not being taken at this time

350       Mathematics (SLS)—Ph.D.

400       Sociology (SLS)—Ph.D.

500      Psychotherapy and Clinical Thinking (SHS)—M.Phil.

600       Development Studies (SDS)—Ph.D.

700       Human Ecology, including ecology, ecological economics, environmental economics, environmental history, political ecology, sustainable development (SHE)—Ph.D.

 · Applicants must indicate whether their qualifying degree (the highest academic degree earned relevant to the area of proposed research) was awarded by an institution within Delhi or outside of Delhi.  (See the boxes at the top of the first page of application.)  For an applicant to an M.Phil. programme, the previous Master’s degree is usually the qualifying degree.  For a Ph.D. applicant, the qualifying degree is usually the highest degree earned.

 · Research studies at AUD, including the admission of scholars to programmes, are organized under the general policy regime of a document notified by the AUD Board of Management in May, 2010: Regulations Concerning Degrees of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) [Item No. 5.7/BOM.31.05.2010].  The academic progress of every research scholar is monitored by a Research Studies Committee (RSC) of the School in which he/she is enrolled.  The RSC’s are in turn responsible to a Standing Committee Research (SCR), which plays many roles in the regulation of research studies and scholars.

· Production and defense of a satisfactory thesis is a requirement for award of the respective degree, whether M.Phil. or Ph.D.

· The normal enrollment period for M.Phil. scholars is between eighteen and twenty-four months (but see below for the M.Phil. in ‘Psychotherapy and Clinical Thinking’).  The normal enrollment period for doctoral scholars holding an M.Phil. degree is between eighteen and thirty-six months.  For doctoral scholars not holding the M.Phil. degree, the normal enrollment period  is between two and four calendar years.  (Extensions of studentship and temporary de-registration may be granted according to terms outlined in AUD’s research studies regulations.)

· The presently advertised M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes at AUD are neither ‘part time’ nor ‘distance learning’ programmes.  Courses are prescribed for M.Phil. scholars and even Ph.D. scholars who have completed an M.Phil. degree may be prescribed course work.  (See the detailed statements about each programme.)  Attendance of classes at one or both AUD campuses (Dwarka and Kashmere Gate), participation in directed learning activities and regular interaction with AUD faculty members is required of each scholar for a period of 1 - 2 semesters (5 – 10 months) in most programmes.  In the M.Phil. programme ‘Psychotherapy and Clinical Thinking’ (PCT) such engagement is expected for the entire duration of the 3-year programme.  Except for scholars enrolled in PCT, those research scholars in regular employment may enroll in AUD research programmes under the condition that they make themselves fully available for supervised academic work.  ‘Job commitments’ do not relieve scholars of their academic responsibilities.  Upon enrollment, each research scholar in regular employment must provide a letter from his/her employer indicating recognition of the scholar’s situation.  Scholars with inexcusable or excessive absences from the prescribed learning activities, and who consequently turn in inadequate work, shall be required to repeat the prescribed courses/activities as per the research studies regulations.  A Research Studies Committee (RSC) could de-register a scholar from his/her respective programme if the scholar fails to participate in or satisfactorily complete the prescribed learning activities.

· Every research scholar at AUD shall receive official supervision and mentorship.  Each M.Phil. scholar shall normally be assigned one research supervisor.  Doctoral scholars may select a single supervisor or choose two formal co-supervisors in cases where the latter could lead to an enriched intellectual experience.  It is normally expected that one co-supervisor shall be an ‘external’ expert, a guide who is not a regular AUD faculty member.  The suitability of the co-supervisory arrangement and the credentials of the external co-supervisor must be approved by the RSC.  AUD (‘in-house’) faculty who are eligible (Eligible Faculty list) to supervise research scholars may have certain requirements and limitations with respect to the kind of work they wish to supervise.  Applicants should familiarize themselves with the information on the AUD website, particularly the faculty profiles (see ‘People’: www.aud.ac.in/aud_fac.asp).  Applicants are encouraged to contact, before submitting their applications, the (eligible) faculty member(s) from whom they would wish to receive supervision.  They should indicate this preference in Item 17 on the official application form.  No applicant is required to indicate a supervisory preference at the time of application.  An official supervisory arrangement is approved by an RSC only after a student’s enrollment and is confirmed once he/she has completed any prescribed course work.  A research scholar wishing to change the supervisory arrangement may normally do so with permission of the RSC.

· Note that most faculty members at AUD are appointed simultaneously to more than one School or Centre.  They may be involved in teaching, research and research supervision in multiple Schools of the University.

· Eligibility of applicants.  Note that the minimum grade/percentage requirements indicated below shall be adjusted for reserved category candidates, according to Government norms.

a.In SHE: research areas of ecology, ecological and environmental economics, environmental history, political ecology and sustainable development.  Applicants should have the degree of M.A./M.Sc./M.Tech. in any relevant discipline with cumulative performance of ≥55% (or equivalent grade average) from a UGC-recognised institution.  An M.Phil. (or equivalent) is not required.

b.In SDS: research in the theory, practice and policies of development across social science disciplines.  Applicants should have the degree of M.A./M.Sc./M.Tech. in any relevant discipline with cumulative performance of ≥55% (or equivalent grade average) from a UGC-recognised institution.  An M.Phil. (or equivalent) is not required.

c. In SHS: research/clinical studies in Psychotherapy and Clinical Thinking (M.Phil.).  Applications for doctoral studies in this School are not being entertained at this time.  M.Phil. applicants should have the degree of M.A./M.Sc. in any relevant discipline with cumulative performance of ≥55% (or equivalent grade average) from a UGC-recognised institution.  See the separate statement about the PCT programme for additional conditions.

d.       In SLS: research in History, Sociology, Hindi Language and Literary Studies, and Mathematics.  Applicants for research in these areas should have the degree of M.A./M.Sc. in any relevant discipline with cumulative performance of ≥55% (or equivalent grade average).  See the statements about these specific programmes for additional information, as some programmes have additional eligibility conditions.

e.       In SES: applications for research in Educational Studies are not being entertained at this time.  See this website later in the year for further announcements about programmes in Educational Studies.

· Item 19 on application form: Statement of Purpose.  Each applicant must write a brief statement (250 – 500 words) indicating his or her reasons for wishing to acquire the research degree.  The applicant should explain here his/her present employment or professional circumstances.

· Item 20 on application form: Research Proposal.  The applicant’s research proposal (of 500 – 1500 words) is a provisional statement about the research she/he intends to pursue for the degree sought.  It is used by the admission committee to assess the applicant’s intellectual aptitude, degree of academic preparation and overall maturity.  In every programme, scholars will be expected to revise and refine their initial research proposals and—usually upon completion of course work (if any is prescribed)--to defend a research synopsis.  The proposal should demonstrate an applicant’s familiarity with scholarly/professional/clinical research or other material relevant to the proposed research topic.  It should identify particular questions or issues the scholar shall investigate in the course of research.  It should also address particular skills, resources, methods or techniques the scholar would need to use or acquire in order to complete the research project.  For example, the applicant could mention relevant languages or quantitative skills he/she has or needs to acquire, or locations of archival sources or fieldwork.  It would be helpful to mention why the applicant wishes to receive supervision from the persons named in Item 17 of the application.  References to scholarly and professional sources of information must be properly cited, following a conventional citation format like MLA, APA, Chicago Manual of Style, or the like.

· Applicants meeting the eligibility criteria of their chosen programme and whose proposed projects are deemed suitable (and which can be supervised by AUD faculty) shall be called for entrance tests and interviews and may be asked to undergo other admission exercises as stipulated by a Research Studies Committee.

· Admission of foreign students.  Foreign applicants and Indian nationals with foreign degrees can be admitted on the same ‘academic performance’ terms as applicants with Indian degrees; their eligibility equivalence must be recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.  Foreign candidates must also produce evidence of their proficiency in English.  The University may administer its own tests of English proficiency in cases where there is ambiguity about the proficiency demonstration.  Admission of any foreign applicant can be finalized only when the candidate produces a student visa endorsed by the Ministry of External Affairs to Ambedkar University, Delhi.  Foreign students must also meet any other conditions specified periodically by the University Grants Commission and the MEA.  Foreign applicants should contact the University at the earliest opportunity for details about these issues and assistance in securing the visa.

· Tuition and fees for Indian nationals shall be assessed at Rs 7,000 per academic year (i.e., two semesters) for the entire period in which a research scholar is enrolled, whether or not he/she is engaged in coursework.  AUD shall offer fee waivers, scholarships and teaching assistantships to research scholars on the basis of merit, financial need, or both.  Research scholars may hold national level research scholarships or grants from international agencies, private foundations, endowments, etc.  The principle is that meritorious students should not be denied opportunity to study at the University for lack of financial means.  Hostel seats may be available to AUD research scholars.  Foreign research scholars shall be assessed basic fees of (equivalent to) US$ 1,000 per academic year (two semesters) as well as a refundable caution deposit of Rs 2,000 (for Library and other facilities). Fees and expenses charged for foreign scholars may be adjusted in cases where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) exists between AUD and a particular foreign university, consortium of universities, foundation, or education authority.
