The two year MA programme in Environment and Development
will attempt to equip students to address the challenges related
to the environment as it centrally impacts our approach towards
development. It includes eleven taught courses: nine core
courses and elective courses of (of 2 or 4 credits each)
totaling 18 credits.
The aim of
the two year M.A. programme in Environment and Development is to
foster interdisciplinary research and learning in the areas at
the intersection of human society, non-human beings and the
biophysical environment. This M.A. programme is designed as an
interdisciplinary one that will give a rigorous understanding of
the debates in social sciences, the environment as well as those
emerging from the world of practice.
Teaching is
done through class lectures, workshops, seminars and field
trips. The programme emphasizes analytical skills, oral and
written communication, and also methodology for social sciences,
ecological research and wider development practice. A strong
component on research methodology comprises of courses in basic
research skills, quantitative and qualitative techniques, and
participatory rural appraisal.
It is
expected that graduates from this programme will be equipped to
work in development organizations, government agencies,
academia, private corporations, non-governmental organizations,
consultancy firms, civil society initiatives, as well as the
media. In order to continuously bring in the best in the
discipline, the course committee has institutionalized
mechanisms by which a feedback on the curriculum is provided by
experts in this field.
